Backgammon History
Thursday, 25 September 2008 03:30

It is believed that backgammon originated several thousand years ago in Mesopotamia in the Persian Empire and is the oldest known board game in recorded history. Then it was known to have been played on wooden surfaces using stones as checkers with dice made from bone, wood, stone or even pottery. Historically, backgammon was associated with the leaders and nobility of the ancient civilisations of Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome and extending to the Far East.

In 1960, backgammon’s popularity was enhanced by promotional tournaments organised by Prince Alexis Obelensky, which included the world’s first official world championship that was played in the Bahamas.

In 1990, the first self learning computer backgammon game was created by Gerald Tesauro of IBM. Later this game’s popularity was further enhanced by its introduction to several online backgammon servers where many thousands of players can enjoy the game. Coupled with the many backgammon tournaments that are scheduled throughout the year, online backgammon is now more popular than ever.
