In backgammon, luck and skill in equal parts makes it attractive to many people. It is possible for a beginner to beat an experienced player if they are lucky with the dice, although, over a series of games an experienced player will usually gain the upper hand.

By understanding the chances of certain numbers appearing, a player is in a better position to make the right decisions to gain victory. Checkers may be exposed to being hit from time to time and when a player is aware of the probabilities, they can play knowing the risk factors involved. 

There is a 6 to 1 chance of any number being rolled on a die. With two dice, the odds of any combination being rolled are 35 to 1. The odds of rolling two numbers such as a 6 and 4 are cut in half at 17 to 1, The odds of rolling a particular sum of two dice changes per number, for example to roll a 7 the odds are 5 to 1.
