There are three main additional or optional rules that can be included in a game of backgammon with both players agreeing. These are: With the automatic doubling rule, if, on the initial roll of the dice identical numbers are thrown by each player, the doubling cube gets turned to 2 and is left in the centre. Players will often agree to an automatic double limit such as one per game. With the beaver rule, a player who is doubled may immediately redouble (known as a beaver) and keep possession of the doubling cube. The opponent may then accept or refuse the redouble as normal. With the Jacoby Rule, when neither player doubles during the course of a game, both gammons and backgammons count as a single game only. This handy rule eliminates the situation where a player playing for a gammon will avoid doubling and thus speeds up game play. |
