As the dealer will stand on hard 17, a player can judge his own hand whether to hit or not. If the dealer’s up card is a 6, there is the best possible chance he will bust.

When holding soft 17, this is a good time to hit in the hope of being dealt a low card such as a 2 or a 3 and the doubling down on the chance of the next card being a 10.

When dealt a pair, the hand can be split but take note of the dealer’s up card. If this is a 6, then it would be advantageous to split your hand. If however, you hold a pair of 5s, if would be better not to split, but to hit for the chance of 21.

If the dealer’s up card is an ace, it is good practice to take the insurance bet, but more so when at the beginning of the deck or shoe as there is a much higher probability of the dealer getting blackjack. When near the end of a deck or show, the likelihood of the dealer getting blackjack is much less, making the insurance bet much less attractive.
