How to Avoid Gambling Mistakes
Wednesday, 07 January 2009 01:59

When just starting out in the world of gambling, many newcomers to this leisure activity seem to believe that they know enough about it to make a lot of money. Unfortunately they then rush blindly in and make many otherwise avoidable mistakes that could prove extremely costly.

As there’s no fun in losing all your money quickly, it pays to be as well informed about your chosen gambling preferences as possible in order to minimise any losses and even turn your fortunes around into winnings. As many seasoned gamblers know already, there is no magic winning formula in gambling. The misconception that Lady Luck will favour the brave is flawed in that the brave can lose their money just as easily as the cautious.

In gambling, the nearest you’ll ever get to a “sure thing” is a better than average set of odds. This is because the very nature of gambling entails an element of risk. But you can minimise that risk as far as possible by keeping in mind some basic strategy points that will at least prevent you from losing money unnecessarily, as we shall now see.

1. Money Management

The first point of huge importance to be aware of when gambling is money management. Money management is exactly what it sounds like it should be. You should manage your money in a way that allows you to gamble within your means. This means that when you commence a session of gambling, you should have a fixed allocation of money, or your bankroll as it is commonly referred to in gambling circles and you should never exceed this allocation. It comes down to what is one of the most important rules of gambling:

“Never gamble more than you can afford to lose.”

This means that you should treat the amount of money that you intend to gamble with as money you don’t need and therefore don’t mind losing. With that strategy firmly fixed in your mind, you are freed from any restrictive emotional distractions about the money and how bad you’d feel to lose it all. By accepting that your bankroll is purely for use during the present gambling session, then your mindset is more positive and you can focus more on the job at hand rather than dwelling on the distracting emotions that come with worrying about losing it all.

Additionally, by your awareness of the sole function of your bankroll, you can then manage the amounts you bet more efficiently. It’s a fact that every gambler will experience a run of bad luck and when this happens, you can reign in your bets until your luck changes for the better. This is safer than recklessly increasing your bets at a time when you are more likely to lose. Managing your bankroll is the single most important thing you can do when gambling.

2. Emotions

When gambling, you need your emotions to be kept in check as getting mad for whatever reason will surely cloud your judgement and lead to reckless betting which can only result in your losing your bankroll. Be aware that you should not avoid certain bets just because they caused you to lose in the past. A certain horse, sports team or gambling establishment may have caused you to lose once, but that doesn’t mean they won’t bring you a good win next time. You should avoid sentiment in betting, such as always placing a wager on a favourite colour or the team you support, as that is no guarantee of a win.

3. Know When to Stop

It is staggering the amount of gamblers, especially but not exclusively novices, who reach their limits or have lost their entire bankroll and continue to gamble with borrowed money in the hope of winning it back. Knowing when to stop is vitally important to being a gambler and surviving. The saying: “He who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day” is very apt when it comes to gambling.

Likewise, it’s all too easy to get caught up in an unprecedented run of good luck and feel like you can do nothing wrong, then throw everything on one sure-fire bet only to have all your winnings cancelled out when it loses. By learning to quit while you’re ahead, you’ll have a much more enjoyable gambling experience.

4. Be Confident

When gambling, a lack of confidence can in itself be a factor in creating more losing bets than necessary. This is often due to hesitation, over thinking things and second guessing the betting strategy you are following. The saying “He who hesitates is lost” is very apt in these situations. Be confident in a strategy that you know has historically worked for you and don’t change it every time you hit a bad spell. This way you will ride the storm with a better chance of coming out of it on top.

Lastly, when you get to a stage where you feel lost and unable to make a decision on which way to go it’s time to take a break and walk away for a while. Then you can return feeling refreshed and focused and back to winning ways.
