How to Succeed as a Gambler Part 1
Wednesday, 25 February 2009 05:21

Everyone wants to succeed as a gambler but the cold hard truth is that many who aspire to that coveted achievement often fail. The good news is that this is a situation that can be corrected by altering some of the gambling habits that have proved costly whilst learning some basic skills and memorising some of the more simple do’s and don’ts of the gambling world. Here in the first of a two part essay which looks at how to succeed as a gambler, we look at correcting some of those bad, losing habits and transforming them into winning habits.

While there are many differences between a winner and a loser with regards to gambling, there are really only a few basic key areas that certainly need to be worked on in order to transform your fortunes. Of course, if you are looking to create that sustainable winning edge that can be replicated again and again, then you will need to go that extra mile to achieve it. However, spending all your time researching, networking and totally living the gambler’s life is not really necessary for you to still be a winner, although it can certainly make a difference to your overall results.

The first obstacle that any gambler needs to conquer is often the most difficult problem of them all. That’s the person they see in the mirror every day. Most gamblers who habitually lose often have no one but themselves to blame, although most will never admit this and will instead conjure up a myriad reasons why they are on a very long and costly losing streak. The reality is every bit as hard to swallow as the excuses, but coming to terms with your own shortcomings can actually be the catalyst that produces the transformation from losing to winning gambler.

The first thing that every gambler must accept is that they will lose from time to time. This is written in stone and is an incontrovertible fact of gambling. Acceptance of this fact can seriously change the way you see yourself in the role of the gambler versus the house. Many gamblers find this so difficult to accept and this act of denial causes loss of self confidence and places a negative outlook on the gambler’s chances. However, by accepting that the house will win and you will lose and when it happens it has nothing to do with your strategy or skill and ability, this can boost your self confidence and place you into a positive frame of mind.

Every gambler knows that when they are feeling positive and confident, they are naturally luckier and tend to find more winning opportunities than at other times. So let’s look at some of the self-destructive gambling habits that many gamblers allow themselves to be drawn into and see how they can be turned around into positives.

When a gambler’s ego gets in the way of their level headedness and starts to break down their strategy, the losses swiftly follow. This can all too easily happen when your heart starts to rule your head in situations where you feel the need to impress someone else. This can be disastrous in situations such as feeling the need to compete with peers, showing off to someone else, trying to settle grudges with rash bets or chasing a sudden run of losses. The key to turning these situations around is to be able look at yourself objectively and admit to yourself that you’re acting in a contrary manner to that which you need to be in order to win. Getting back on track and reminding your head that it must rule your heart when it comes to gambling can produce the transformation needed to restore your winning ways.

One of the biggest mistakes a gambler can make is to go chasing a run of losses and it is one that most will make at some point along the way. It comes down to realising that if you cannot afford to lose the money in the first place, then you certainly cannot afford to lose more by placing additional bets in order to attempt to recoup the losses. The winners are the ones who learn from making this mistake and are mindful of repeating it.

Another huge mistake many gamblers are guilty of making are the interest bets, or those in which emotion gets in the way of level headedness. It can happen in sports betting when you are co-opted into making a side bet on the outcome of a game that you have no real knowledge of. It happens often that a person offering the bet will have some prior knowledge perhaps on the current form of a team, or horse, or whatever it may be that will give them an edge that places you at a disadvantage. The gambler who has his head on straight would always decline the bet unless there were really no way of gaining an edge, such as a completely random event.

In the second part of this essay, we’ll be looking at more situations that can plague a losing gambler and which can be avoided or turned around to the gambler’s advantage.
