Omaha Poker History

Not too much is actually known for certain about the early history of Omaha poker, but one fact is certain in that the game did not originate in Omaha, Nebraska. It is also a relatively new form of poker as there are no references to this form of poker in the classic “A Course in Power Poker” by Doyle Brunson or the 1983 published “Winning Poker” by David Sklansky.

It is believed that Omaha poker came into being around 36 years ago when other forms of the game were altered in certain situations, such as versions where players were dealt four private cards as they are in today’s Omaha, and also variations where players receive five cards as they do in the modern five card variation of Omaha.

In 1982, the four card variation of Omaha poker was introduced into casinos in Las Vegas, where it became an instant success. Omaha soon crept into tournament play, acting as side action games during regular casino cash games and tournaments. Omaha gained a reputation for creating plenty of action. Because so many aficionados of the game found it tough to find a starting four-card hand they wouldn’t play, the game of Omaha became nicknamed “The Game of the Future.”

Despite its short history, Omaha poker has rapidly become one of the most popular forms of poker played today in casinos, poker rooms and online.
