It was an inevitability that the film makers in Hollywood were going to get around to making a movie based on the world of Internet gambling sooner or later. With the current enormous growth in this industry and a popularity that is soaring, an Internet gambling movie is just the thing to ride the industry’s wave of success.

It’s with this in mind that scriptwriters Brian Koppleman and David Levien have penned the script of an as yet unnamed movie, which has attracted a lot of attention from Hollywood’s biggest stars, many of whom are keen to star in a movie themed on gambling.

Leonardo DiCaprio is the megastar who has sealed the deal to play the leading role in the movie, which is said to centre on the Internet gambling industry and focuses on several of the online casinos that are based in Costa Rica. So far, no further details have been released about the impending movie, although DiCaprio has been working with the scriptwriters on a movie entitled “Beat the Reaper,” that was written by Koppleman and Levien and is based on the blockbuster novel of the same name, written by Josh Bazell.

Koppleman and Levien have plenty of experience in writing about gambling, being the masterminds behind the cult movie "Rounders", believed by many to be one of the very best gambling movies ever screened. That movie starred Matt Damon and also Edward Norton and featured the underground world of poker.

Gambling movies have had mixed success over the years, with some breaking box office records and other fading into mediocrity. As a case in point, the recent gambling movie “Deal” had made only $35,281 in the opening weekend. In stark contrast to that, the movie “21” which starred Kevin Spacey was a huge success. It followed the amazing progress of a group of university students and their mentor as they took Las Vegas casinos for an absolute fortune by using the technique of card counting at blackjack. Similarly, the first James Bond movie to star Daniel Craig, the remake of “Casino Royale” was also a major box office success riding on the wave of the 007 phenomenon and the popularity of casinos coupled with the attraction of the high roller’s card game, baccarat.

The hope is that by attracting a very big name such as Leonardo DiCaprio to star in the new movie, it will enjoy a similar success following in the footsteps of these and other great gambling themed movies.
