Marvel-Disney Deal Could Impact Online Video Slots
Monday, 14 September 2009 00:41

Online casinos powered by Cryptologic have as one of their major attractions some great video slots featuring popular Marvel Comic characters such as Spiderman, the Daredevil and the X-Men. A recent announcement that the giant movie company Disney has now acquired the owner of those comic book characters, Marvel Entertainment for a sum of an estimated $4 billion could cause problems for Cryptologic.

A deal was brokered between Marvel Entertainment and Cryptologic with a contract that allows the online casino games developer to use certain superhero characters as themes for some of their video slots games. That contract will be honoured by Disney until it expires, but aftern that happens there is uncertainty as to the fate of those particular video games.

The uncertainly stems from Disney's reputation as a wholesome family company that provides cartoon shows and movies for children along with their amusement parks and other family oriented promotions. Online gambling might not be seen as something that Disney will want to be associated with. While Disney does produce R-rated movies and other mainly adult related entertainment content, they do so through related companies so that their name is not directly related to them and people would not necessarily associate them with the family brand of Disney.

Now that Disney has the rights to use Marvel comic characters as they see fit, they may be considering adding the likes of Spiderman, Batman and Captain America etc to their family theme parks as they already do with classic cartoon characters Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse. Once that happens, it is doubtful they will want those same superhero characters portrayed on gambling games when the contract with Cryptologic ends.

Cryptologic's business development vice president, Justin Thouin has spoken out in an attempt to allay any fears that there may be any impact on the existing licensing contract with Marvel Entertainment, now the Disney organisation. He stated that his company's contract with Marvel will run to 2013 and he is confident that it will continue after that.

For the present at least, it seems that gamers will be able to continue to enjoy the video slots games that are based on Marvel superhero characters. However, casino game software developers may have to start looking to other superhero characters to take their places if Disney decides to take a firm stance on how their new acquisition's most important commodities are used in future.
