Roulette History

With regards the history of Roulette, the general consensus is that the game with its trademark spinning wheel was originally created from an attempt at making a perpetual motion machine by French scientist and inventor Blaise Pascal in 1655. In fact the word roulette translates as “small wheel” in French. While the initial derivative of the game was played in a French monastery to relieve the boredom of the monks, it soon appeared in an early casino in Paris. There it developed its charismatic image as a game for the rich and glamorous.

In 1842, the first casinos were established in Monte Carlo by Francois and Luis Blanc. The legendary tale developed where the devil himself shared the secret of roulette with them in exchange for their souls. The two men chose the numbers 0 to 36 for their wheel, whose sum totals 666 - the biblical number depicting the beast!

With alternating colours and odd and even numbers, the first modern roulette wheel was put into service in a Paris casino.

In the early 1800s, roulette migrated to the US where gold miners and speculators in what was then the Wild West embraced the game. It soon became popular all across the United States but particularly in the west during the Gold Rush period. It was during this time that the roulette wheel featuring the single zero was rejected in the United States, in favour of that with two zeros (“0” and “00”). This was mainly because casino owners were unhappy with the lower house edge created by the European single zero wheels. The extra zero pocket increases the house edge quite considerably.

Despite the fact that both wheels originated in France, the double zero version earned the label “American Wheel.” The single zero version roulette wheel was more popular in Europe and became known as the “French Wheel.” Nowadays you’ll find a roulette wheel in every casino in the world as well as those of online casinos.
