As with many casino games, there is some dispute over the true history of the game of poker. Most believe the game was initially played in Germany on the form of a game called “Pochen,” which translates to knock. This game is then believed to have travelled to France where it evolved into a game called “Poque.”

While there is no certainty that these are the terms from which “poker” is derived, it is believed that the modern form of poker as it is known today had many different origins, variations and influences. Some of these influences may have stemmed from games such as the Persian game of “‘as nas,” or the Renaissance game known as “‘primero,” and even the French game of “brelan.”

Despite this veil of uncertainty, it is much better documented that the game’s concept of bluffing was initially derived from the English game of “brag,” which is generally a three card game (although there are several multi-card variations) where the winner is the holder of the strongest three card hand. The types of hand are similar to poker in that the lowest hand is a high (such as ace high), followed by a pair, flush, straight (run), straight flush (running flush) and finally a prial (three of a kind) with a prial of three’s being the top hand over aces.

The several variations of the game of poker grew in popularity in the United States during the times of the Wild West. The game spread through many places in the nation on the Mississippi river boat casinos, where the game was adopted. It is most likely that many of the poker variations emerged during these times.

Stud poker in its earliest form emerged during the time of the American Civil War. 7 Card Stud soon became the most popular poker variant back in the 1850's and stayed that way all through to the 1970s. At this time Texas Hold'em overtook 7 Card Stud as the most popular variation of poker in casinos and gaming establishments, although it remains a highly popular game especially amongst home players.
