Seven Card Stud Rules

Antes: The ante is a small bet that each player has to contribute at the start of every hand.

The Stakes: For each round of betting, the bet and raise amount are dictated by the stakes. The is used for The first two rounds use the lower number, the last three use higher number.

The Cap: Each round of betting in Seven-Card Stud consists of one bet plus three allowable raises maximum, which is called the cap. Once a bet is made, it can only be raised three times. Thereafter, players must call or fold. The exception is when there are only two players remaining in the hand. Then the cap increases to five raises maximum.

The Pocket: The dealer first deals each player 2 face-down cards in turn, which is called the pocket.

The Door: The dealer next deals each player in turn one face-up card, called the door.

The Bring-In: The player who has the lowest door card posts the "bring-in." The bring-in is a mandatory first bet and is usually half the amount of the smaller stake and it purpose is to encourage other players to stay in while increasing the pot. The bring-in player can increase this bet to as much as the full small stake if he wishes. When two players show the same door card, suit rankings decide the weakest hand. Suits rank strongest to weakest: Spades, Hearts, Diamonds and Clubs.

All players must call, raise or fold to the bring-in to stay in the game. The betting starts with the player on the bring-in player's left. It continues clockwise round the table. If the bring-in player opens with a bet of half the low stake, then the first raise "completes" the bring-in, by raising it up to the lower stake limit. All raises following that must equal the amount of the lower stake.

Third Street: Once all the bring-in bets are all called, each player gets dealt a further face-up card, known as "Third Street." This time, the highest showing hand gets to open the betting round. Should a pair show for any Third Street hand, that player can double their bet amount, thereby "raising the stake" for the round. If not, all Third Street bets and raises remain limited to that of the small stake.

Fourth Street: After the third street, each player is dealt another face-up card. The high hand again opens the betting round. The bet amount is now at the higher stake for the three final rounds.

Fifth Street: After the fourth street, each player is dealt a fourth face-up card. Once again, the high hand opens the betting round.

The River: After the fifth street, each player is dealt a final (seventh) card face down, known as The River. The final betting round commences with the highest showing hand beginning the betting. All river bets are limited to the upper stake.

One special circumstance: At this point, if there are still eight players in the game it would mean 56 cards are necessary which is obviously more than are in the deck. This issue is solved by the dealer flipping a single community card into the centre of the table. This card can be used by all players to complete their hand.

The Showdown: Once all bets have been called, it's time to pay the winner. During the River, the player to bet or raise last, shows their hand first. If nobody bet on the river, the player on the dealer’s left shows first. All other players' hands are then revealed going clockwise, unless a player has a weaker hand than the best hand shown. If this is the case, that player can either show or fold without showing (muck). The best five-card hand is the winner and takes the pot.

Buying the Pot: If you place a bet and all other players fold (during a betting round), you have bought the pot. You can either show or muck your cards.
