Slots Probabilities

As there is no true strategy that can be employed with slots games in general, any success a play has is usually down to simple good luck. This is enhanced a little by choosing the right game to play.

This means knowing the payout percentages of the game you are playing and the probabilities of the game paying out at each level, from the small payouts right up to the jackpot.

This is not an easy task as different slots games in different casinos carry different payout odds as well as being affected by a slightly different house edge from casino to casino. The player is helped in some way in that some of the better casinos do publish their house edge and payout odds for some of their slots games.

Using this information, as a general rule of thumb, the closer a payout percentage of a slots game gets to 100%, the better chance a player has of winning. Some slots games, notably some video poker games actually pay out at greater than 100%, relying on the inexperience of the vast majority of players to cause them to make small errors of play which will inevitably swing the edge percentage back to the house.

In modern day online slots games, the average house edge that you will most likely come across in the better online casinos is roughly 9%, which means the game will payout 91 cents for every dollar it takes. But because the nature of slots games is not to return bets at a steady level, but to pay out larger amounts less frequently, their attraction is greater because it means that while one player may lose everything, the next player might win the jackpot for the price of only a small number of bets.
