The history of Video Poker is closely link with that of slots machines in that the very first slots machines made were in fact the true forerunner of today’s Video Poker games. In 1891, Sittman and Pitt created the first slot machine, four years before Fey created the famous Liberty Bell slot machine. Their original game featured 50 playing card symbols across 5 drums with the Jack and Ten of Spades removed. This made it more difficult to complete higher poker hands such as straights. Players won drinks or cigars for getting winning poker hands. It wasn’t until 1970 that the first true video poker machine was created. Dale Electronics produced the Poker-Matic which soon became installed in Las Vegas Casinos but were not an instant hit as players were wary of them and did not trust the payouts. In 1979 the turning point came for video poker when the company Sircoma (later IGT) introduced the Draw Poker video poker machine which was a rapid hit since it used video technology rather than spinning wheels to arrive at winning hands. Popularity of these machines grew through the 1980s and 90s. In 1994 Microgaming produced the very first online casino software package. Internet technology had become sufficiently robust to bring video poker online and at the fingertips of millions of gamers worldwide and the world of online video poker as we now know it was born. |
