The World Series of Poker started life back in 1968. It was an invitational poker event which was sponsored by Tom Moore of San Antonio, Texas. This even was held at the Holiday Hotel and Casino in Reno. This inaugural world poker tournament was won by Crandell Addington.

The World Series of Poker (WSOP) was destined to evolve into a set of tournaments and was devised by Benny Binion, a poker player casino owner in Las Vegas.

The first WSOP took place in 1970 at Binion's Horseshoe. The format was a series of cash poker games that included five-card stud, seven-card stud, razz, deuce to seven low-ball draw and Texas hold 'em. The winner of the event was Johnny Moss, who was elected first World Champion of Poker by his peers and he received a silver cup as a prize.

The Main Event format as a freeze-out Texas hold 'em game was instigated the following year. The success of the tournament sealed the WSOP as an annual event which gained popularity year after year. From an entrants list of 512 in 2000, the number of entrants has steadily grown to this year’s figure of 6,844 and a first place prize of $9,119,517 making it easily the richest world poker tournament of them all.
