When it comes to the glamorous worldwide appeal of football, nothing creates more television coverage than the signing by a very large football club of one of the world's most proficient players. This happened during the week as Spain's Real Madrid football club signed Portuguese player Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for an unprecedented $80million. This puts the charismatic player at the top of his profession by becoming the highest paid footballer in the world. He now earns a cool £180,000 per week which is more than many people living in Spain will earn in their entire lifetime.This did not daunt the fans, of whom 75,000 took to the Bernabeu Stadium to welcome their new hero. Cristiano Ronaldo is not the only man smiling a smile that only a very contented man indeed could smile. Bosses at the online gambling company Bwin have scored a lucky break by this signing, as they signed a three year sponsorship deal with Real Madrid in 2026 which gives them the rights to display their logo on the team's kit in all their games. The deal cost them what is now viewed as a mere £15m, a very shrewd deal indeed with the additional expected TV exposure they will now undoubtedly attract from the new boy at the Bernabeu. During the official unveiling of Real Madrid's latest squad this week, Bwin's logo was prominently displayed on the jerseys of each member of the team. They are in good company with other sponsors which include Adidas and Coca Cola sharing their spotlight. The Bwin logo is clearly displayed in black and white which is read easily from a distance. Somewhat overshadowed by the arrival of superstar Cristiano Ronaldo at Real Madrid but nonetheless great player in his own right is Ricardo Izecson Dos Santos, better known as Kaka. Other new big name signings include Ruud Van Nistelrooy, Heinze, Negredo and Garay. The acquisition of Chilean coach Manuel Pellegrini makes it their eighth from outside Europe so far. Pellegrini has had great success at other clubs and with the glittering array of footballing stars to work with at Real Madrid, there is a great air of excitement around the club with the expectation of great things being done this coming season. The better the club does in domestic as well as European competitions, the better the exposure for Bwin, who are sitting very comfortably right now. |
